DELL: New Products Change Economics of Storage for Small, Medium Businesses

Dell has announced storage systems designed to change the economics of storage for small and medium businesses by bringing enterprise-class capabilities to more affordable price points and helping customers scale operations as storage needs increase.

The new products span both the Dell/EMC and Dell PowerVault product lines to provide a comprehensive and cost-effective storage solution for primary storage and backup.

“Small and medium businesses today are seeing the same challenge of managing significant data growth with flat budgets that large businesses started to see a few years ago. Our mission is to help customers balance this equation,” said Darren Thomas, vice president and general manager for Dell’s storage business. “We are delivering capabilities that were historically out of reach for one of the fastest-growing customer segments – small and medium businesses.”

New from Dell/EMC is the CX3-10, an entry-level storage area network (SAN) array with innovative data protection and availability. Supporting iSCSI and Fibre Channel hosts, this array extends the reach of the enterprise-class UltraScale architecture to small and medium businesses. iSCSI is a key technology in Dell’s strategy to change to the economics of storage. iSCSI-based SANs provide significant cost advantages over traditional Fibre Channel SANs – with lower fabric, implementation and maintenance costs.

The Dell/EMC CX3-10 simplifies storage operations by bundling necessary software for failover and management, as well as offering an all-SATA drive configuration for customers seeking bulk storage. Combined with Dell PowerEdge servers, the flexibility, robust feature set and price make the Dell/EMC CX3-10 an ideal platform for server virtualization.

Within its PowerVault line, Dell introduced two new tape libraries – the PowerVault TL 2000 and the PowerVault TL4000. For most customers, tape backup and archiving are integral to a disaster recovery plan. The PowerVault TL2000 and PowerVault TL4000 deliver simplified data protection and the benefits of tape automation at the price points historically held by autoloaders.

Using these products together – the Dell/EMC CX3-10 and the PowerVault tape libraries – allows SMB customers to easily consolidate and simplify storage environments while meeting growing capacity requirements. These systems help customers build reliable, centralized solutions for storing, backing up, recovering, and archiving critical data.

Each of these products can be combined with a range of Dell services to help customers plan, implement and maintain the IT infrastructure. For example, the Dell/EMC Maintenance offering is designed to help keep storage systems current and healthy. It includes periodic health checks, software and system updates and upgrades, and how-to assistance for configuring or installing SAN components.

The Dell/EMC CX3-10 is ideal for budget-conscious customers who require high availability for increasing data capacity and upgradeability for investment and data protection.

Key features and benefits of the Dell/EMC CX3-10 include:
Multi-Fabric Connectivity: iSCSI and Fibre Channel host connectivity designed for maximum deployment flexibility and highly efficient storage consolidation.
Simplified Management: Simple task-based management of storage via the new Navisphere Task Bar.
Advanced Data Protection: Supports a full suite of data replication applications for local snapshots and remote mirroring.
Configuration Flexibility: Mix Fibre Channel and SATA disk drives to meet tiered storage requirements or deploy an all-SATA configuration for a low cost entry point with maximum scalability.
Streamlined Deployment: Using Dell’s build-to-order factory capabilities, customers can custom-order SAN-ready Dell PowerEdge Servers with a broad range of Fibre Channel host bus adapter cards and iSCSI-ready network interface cards factory installed and tested, eliminating several steps in SAN installation.

Available now, the hardware pricing for the Dell/EMC CX3-10 starts around $22,000.

How to prolong the lifetime of your battery

April 7, 2008 by anniepan

. Use the original charger.
. Charge the battery after it automatically powers off , then full charge the battery.
. Avoid erroneous usage of battery, such as heavy pressure, short circuit, fall off and so on.
Advantages of lithium ion rechargeable battery
. Reduces the weight by half and volume by 20% to 50% compared to the same capacity nickel-cadmium and nickel-metal-hydride battery.
. Reduces the number of battery required since lithium ion battery can provide three times the voltage of Ni-Cd and Ni-MH battery, which contributes to miniaturization of electronic devices.
. Unlike nickel-cadmium battery, lithium ion battery have no “memory” effect, the effect which causes charging capacity to be reduced by repeatedly charging and discharging to insufficient levels, therefore, partial charging is possible.
. Lithium-ion is a low maintenance battery, an advantage that most other chemistries cannot claim. There is no memory and no scheduled cycling is required to prolong the battery’s life. In addition, the self-discharge is less than half compared to nickel-cadmium, making lithium-ion well suited for modern fuel gauge applications. lithium-ion cells cause little harm when disposed.
. Most lithium-ion batteries for portable applications are cobalt-based. The system consists of a cobalt oxide positive electrode (cathode) and a graphite carbon in the negative electrode (anode). One of the main advantages of the cobalt-based battery is its high energy density. Long run-time makes this chemistry attractive for cell phones, laptops and cameras.
. There is only one way to charge lithium-based batteries. The so-called ‘miracle chargers’, which claim to restore and prolong batteries, do not exist for lithium chemistries. Neither does super-fast charging apply. Manufacturers of lithium-ion cells have very strict guidelines in charge procedures and the pack should be charged as per the manufacturers “typical” charge technique.
. A certain battery may be designed for small size and long runtime, but this pack has a limited cycle life. Another battery may be built for durability but is big and bulky. A third pack may have high energy density and long durability but this version is too expensive for the consumer. Battery manufacturers are aware of customer needs and offer packs that best suit the application.

Rechargeable batteries

March 21, 2008 by anniepan

Rechargeable batteries for laptops, cameras and phones are usually lithium-ion.

Lithium-ion batteries do best with frequent partial discharges. Lithium-ion batteries have a longer lifespan if you don’t let them run down often. Unlike other batteries, lithium-ion batteries don’t develop memory. Memory occurs when crystals form inside the battery. These crystals prevent the battery from holding a full charge.

Lithium-ion batteries also contain a fuel gauge. This fuel gauge is used to judge how much power is left before you must recharge. Occasionally, this gauge must be calibrated. Otherwise, it won’t give an accurate reading. You calibrate the gauge by draining the battery completely and recharging it. Do this about once a month for frequently used gadgets.

Tips to maximize laptop battery power

March 21, 2008 by anniepan

+Eliminate all programs in the background that are unnecessary (ie a webcam manager, when you don’t actually have the webcam connected)
+Turn down the brightness (normally it’s a keyboard combination, like FN plus up or down)
+Enable “maximize battery” or whatever preset that came installed on the PC. My girlfriend’s Toshiba had one that you could press FN and the key with the lightbulb icon and it changed modes from Max to normal to max battery to DVD.

Definitely check to make sure your battery is charging to maximum capacity. That Toshiba I mentioned once had a lemon battery that would only charge to 33%. Bestbuy, where she bought it and got a replacement plan for it, allows for 1 battery replacement per year or something like that. New dual core processors, especially mobile ones, should last at least 2-3 hours on battery.

To charge the laptop, simply plug in the laptop while it’s off or on. Nothing else required. If it’s off, the battery will charge faster, but the battery charges in like 2-3 hours while on too. Most lithium ion batteries do a “spurt” charging, where it charges to ~85% in 1 hour, then trickle charges the other 15% in another hour or so.

You can probably find the laptop instructions online. Just search for the laptop model.

A third manufacturer

January 23, 2008 by anniepan

It is a good way to use a third manufacturer when purchasing a battery because there are usually many extra benefits. For instance, the replacement batteries are much lower in price than original batteries. Secondly, they usually offer a superior warranty, as they realize that in order to win the consumer’s confidence, they must stand behind their product. Buy any replacement battery with a warranty less than one year. Batteries have been known to die early and warranty could leave you high and dry.
